Origine del nomine

Le etymologia le plus verisimile es que illo deriva ab un vocabulo iroquoian pro prato o prateria (confere mohawk kenhtà:ke, seneca këhta'keh). Altere etymologias es possibile: un nomine wyandot que significa "terra de deman", un vocabulo shawnee que significa le capite de un riviera, o un vocabulo algonquian pro le basso de un riviera.
