Das Wappen in seiner heutigen Form wurde am 6. März 1930 genehmigt und geht zurück auf Siegelführung aus der Zeit der 1222 erfolgten Stadtgründung. Bereits das erste Stadtsiegel zeigt die Buche.

Im Wappenfaltblatt des Kreises Borken wird die Wappenbeschreibung dieses Stadtwappens ausführlicher dargestellt:

„In grünem Feld eine gerade aufgewachsene, ausgerissene silberne Buche mit drei symmetrisch verteilten Ästen mit dazwischen stehenden Einzelzweigen. Die Zahl der Blätter beträgt 17. Sie zeigen Rippen und sind gezahnt. Die Zahl der an den langen Stielen erscheinenden Bucheckern ist 23. Die Zahl der Wurzeln beträgt 5. Unten am Stamm befindet sich je links und rechts ein abgehauener Auswuchs.“
