This fungus starts off a small roundish patches of radiating carbonaceous hysteriothecia on a coarsely woolly black subiculum. The fruiting bodies grow and extend over a larger area, becoming confluent and creating crustlike patches many centimeters in extent. I saw a rotten old one on an oak log that was more than ten cm in length. I’ve found it two times now and both were on rotted oak.
Based on microscopic features: Bitunicate asci. 8-spored, cylindrical with shortish stipe. Mine average a little larger than what’s listed in the descriptions but who’s counting microns? What!?
Ascospores average 26.5 × 7 micrometers. Hyaline.
